BioQuest Competitions
What are BioQuests?
Each year students from around the world compete for their school/university as they explore the magic of the natural world through our nature positive games - like Spirits of the Realms (SotR).
To compete, a school/university must first have a Nature Realm subscription. This can be for their campus/school grounds, the broader surrounds, or a different area of their choosing. The primary focus of the BioQuest is to see which nature realm will increase its bioscore the most. Players can contribute to the bioscore through any integrated citizen science biodiversity monitoring apps (including Spirits of the Realms).
For extra fun, schools/universities teams can also compete from anywhere to see who can get the highest scores in Spirits of the Realms. To score highly players must collect nature spirit allies as they explore the real-world through AR. Players can only succeed in collecting spirits by submitting sightings of species 'in the wild', and by completing 'chronicles' (identifying other players sightings).
I'm a student. How do I join a BioQuest?
Download the Spirits of the Realms (SotR) game.
Make sure your school/university appears as competing within the webpage for the BioQuest you want to join. Here are the current and upcoming BioQuests:
Pest Invaders 2024 (for P-12 schools)
Schools BioQuest, April 2024 (for P-12 schools)
Join your school's team via the 'Spirit' tab on your school's Nature Realm webpage. Then simply play SotR within your school/university nature realm's boundary (to score for the realm) or anywhere in the world (to score for your team).
Optional: Test your ID skills in the Oracle of Life (focusing on the area around competing Nature Realms).
If your school/university is not yet participating, reach out to your teachers and get that fixed!
I'm a teacher or staff member. How do I get my school/university involved in a BioQuest?
Create a Nature Realm for your school/university.
Contact us to confirm which BioQuest you would like your school added to, and if you are eligible for a free or discounted Nature Realm subscription. (psssst - If you're part of the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots & Shoots or Rewild Your School Programs - we'll give you a free 12-month subscription.)
Get your students playing Spirits of the Realms (SotR) game. Watch your Nature Realm's bioscore increase as you map more and more 'wild' life within its boundary. Encourage your team to explore the magic of the real-world wherever they can with SotR, and see your team climb the leaderboard.
How do we win a BioQuest?
There are several ways to win:
Top Nature Realms - Which school/university's nature realm (i.e. campus or surrounds) will increase its bioscore the most?
Top Teams - Which school/university's team will collectively score highest in Spirits of the Realms? Based on collecting spirit allies by submitting sightings and completing 'chronicles' (identifying other players sightings).
Top Players - Which player will beat out all others and claim the highest score in Spirits of the Realms? Based on collecting spirit allies by submitting sightings and completing 'chronicles' (identifying other players sightings).
Top Identifiers - Who will earn the most biocoin through correct identifications of sightings submitted in participating realms? Test your ID skills in the Oracle of Life.
